About the Episcopal Church in the Bay Area 

The Episcopal Church in the Bay Area, formally known as the Diocese of California, is a diverse community of faith with congregations spread throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Approximately 18,000 baptized people form our 72 congregations. We are comprised of six deaneries (a geographical group of congregations): the Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and Southern Alameda deaneries cover their respective counties; the Peninsula deanery consists of all of San Mateo County and a small portion of Santa Clara County.

Bishop Austin Keith Rios

On May 4, 2024, the Rt. Rev. Austin Keith Rios was ordained and consecrated as the Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of California. He became our diocesan bishop and the Ninth Bishop of California following the retirement of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus on July 31, 2024. Bishop Rios will be installed at Grace Cathedral on August 11, 2024.
